Hello parents,
Can you believe we only have two weeks left until EOG's? If you have not yet marked your calendars for June 20th and 21st (Monday, Tuesday) please do so and make sure your child gets a good night of sleep and a hearty breakfast on those days. We will be doing a spattering of review in math and reading throughout the next two weeks to ensure that all 4th grade curriculum is fresh in the students' minds.
Tomorrow (Wednesday 6.8.16) is our last Family Fun Night for this year. It will be from 4-8pm at Goodberry's near Strickland and Six-Forks. If you go, tell them you are from Pleasant Union. We get a percentage of the proceeds from these, and it's a great way to beat the heat too!
Next Friday (6.17.16) from 2:45-3:30 is our presentation of our Festival Floats. This is a project that the students work on in school. They are not expected to complete anything outside of class aside from gathering the materials they need so they can bring them to school.
Ms. Coleman has asked me to pass along the information below regarding this Social Studies project.
SS Project- We will begin building our floats Thursday afternoon. Please send in their materials by Thursday. I could use 1-2 parents to help with gluing their artifacts on their float with the glue guns. We will work on this Thursday and next Tuesday (2:45-3:35). Email me at [email protected] if you are available to help. Parents and family are invited to our NC Festival Float Parade next Friday, June 17 from 2:45-3:35.
Next Friday (6.17.16) the PTA will be holding "Donuts for Dad." That will be from 8:00-8:45 in the morning. See the weekly email from Mr. Biles for more information on that.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.
Thank you.

Hello parents,
Today I will be sending home permission slips and packing/planning information for our field trip to Carolina Ocean Studies on Wednesday, June 1st. Please fill that out and send that back as soon as possible. There are two papers that are both double-sided. One of them is the permission slip, and one of them is the information. I just need the permission slip back. You keep the information.
Tomorrow (5.18.16) is our in-house field trip. That will be from 11:55-1:10. It is focused on rocks and minerals.
Thursday (5.19.16) is field day. Our field day is from 12:30-2:30. Please make sure to put sunscreen on your child prior to coming to school. Also wear tennis shoes. Per Wake County Policy, sunscreen is considered "medication" and the correct forms must be filled out in the office in order for your child to apply it during school hours.
This Friday (5.20.16) from 7:00pm-8:30pm is our school talent show. This is always a great opportunity to see all the talented children of Pleasant Union. You are sure to smile if you come.
Interims will be going home next Tuesday (5.24.16).
Next Thursday (5.26.16) at 2:00 is the 4th grade recorder performance. Feel free to join if you would like to see that.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns please let me know.
Thank you.

Hello parents and happy Cinco de Mayo,
It seems that this week is the calm before the storm. We don't have too many things on the schedule for the upcoming week. I'm sure it will start to get busy as we edge in on testing time. Here are the items to note in the near future.
Tomorrow (Friday) is Muffins with Mom at 8:00 in the school cafeteria. Join us if you can, that's always a great time.
Tomorrow (Friday) is also Writing in PJ's day. Our class won a prize of our choosing for turning in so many box tops this year. We, as a class, chose to do a movie and pajama day. We will be watching the movie, then afterward writing stories from the villains point of view. It should make for some fun dinner table discussions. For those of you who have read "The True Story of the Three Little Pigs" that is similar to what we will be doing. It's the classic tale told from the wolf's point of view.
Tomorrow (Friday) is also P.E. day for specials, so remember to either send a change of clothes, or have your child wear something that is appropriate for P.E.
That's it for this week.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.
Thanks.

Hello parents, and welcome back to the last quarter of 4th grade!
*The symphony trip was unfortunately canceled. We are currently looking into in-house field trip options to use that money that you already sent in.
*I'm looking for a volunteer with a bandsaw. I've asked around, and Seven Oaks tennis club was nice enough to donate some used tennis balls. I would like them to be cut in half so we can use them for our fidgety feet. I had the opportunity to visit some other classrooms at other schools over track out and saw tennis ball halves being used as a form of energy release under desks for students to press on with their feet. I would like to try that idea in our class, but don't currently have the resources to effectively cut tennis balls in half. If you are willing to help out, please send me an email and I'll send home about 20 tennis balls with your child for you to cut into halves. Thank you in advance for that.
*Tomorrow (Friday) is our author visit. Deborah Willis will be visiting Pleasant Union.
*I believe I sent out dates a while ago, but please re-check your calendars and mark June 20th and 21st for EOG's this year.
That is all for this week.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.

Hello parents,
*Here are the final things you need to know before track out.
*Today from 2:00-3:30 is our Learning Experience. Hopefully you can join the class for that this afternoon.
*Tomorrow (Thursday, March 24th) we plan on watching “The Watsons go to Birmingham” as a final look into historical fiction for 3rd quarter. Since this movie is rated PG, I do need parent permission per Wake County policy in order to show this movie to your child.
The brief summary of the movie is below for those of you who have not seen it.
The Watsons set out on a family road trip where their experiences give them a newfound courage to stand up for what is right and helps them grow stronger as a family in the process.
It is set in 1963 in the south and deals with some racial segregation topics.
***I will be sending a paper copy of this today, however you can just reply to this email with "Yes, my child may watch" or a "No, I do not want my child to watch."***
You do not need to do both. Either email response or paper signature are fine.
*Tomorrow is track out. There will be no school on Friday.
*I sent a sign-up genius a earlier this week for parent/teacher/student conferences. If you did not get that email, here is a link to sign up for a slot.
http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0d4bacac2ea2fc1-3rdquarter
*The last field trip of the year will be to Carolina Ocean Studies on June 1st. The students will be going on a boat for this field trip. More information can be found here.

Hello parents,
Here are a few important things for this week.
Tomorrow (Wednesday) is our field trip to go see "HONK" at Wakefield middle school. The bus will be leaving school around 9:30 so please be sure your child is here on time. We plan to be back at school around 12:30 for those of you trying to schedule for Pieces of Gold.
Our Pleasant Union Chorus is performing at the annual Pieces of Gold show tomorrow night. Good luck to those students. We have a large contingent from our class participating in that performance.
We are planning for Case 21 testing at the end of this quarter. Please try to make sure your child is here on Tuesday and Wednesday (22nd and 23rd) for those tests. These are the tentative dates. They may get moved forward a day, but I will let you know as I find out. Those tests provide a pretty good indicator as to how we expect our students to do on EOG's, so please talk to your child about taking their time, doing their best, getting lots of sleep the night before, and eating a healthy breakfast.
I sent home final balance payments for our spring field trip (June 1st) to Carolina Ocean Studies. Please send that payment in before we track out. Checks can be made out to PUE.
I think that covers all the important things for this week.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns please let me know.
Thank you.

Hello parents,
We have a few important points for the upcoming week. Here are the dates to keep in mind.
Tuesday's field trip to Wakefield High School to see HONK has been rescheduled for Wednesday, March 9th. I received an email Tuesday morning explaining a conflict at the high school regarding ACT testing. I wanted to wait until the new date was confirmed to let you know. That trip will now be March 9th.
The symphony field trip is being rescheduled but we do not currently have a date for that. I will pass that information along once I get that.
Next week Wednesday is our Enterprise Day. Please join us from 2:00-3:00 if possible. Tickets for Enterprise day will be sold to parents at a price of 5 tickets for $1. Tickets will not be sold to students. They will be shopping using their earned tickets from 3rd quarter behavior.
3rd quarter interims were sent home yesterday. I will be scheduling conferences over track out, but if you would like to meet before then please let me know and I would be happy to find the time.
As always, feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have.
Thank you.

Hello parents:
This Saturday will be a make up day for our snow day on Monday. School will be from 9:15-12:15. Please let me know if your child will not be here so we can plan for Saturday.
Enterprise day is on March 2nd from 2:00-3:00. Please join us if you can. The students love this project and the excitement will be high on that day. We have been working on making commercials and putting together board builders to showcase the businesses. We will continue to work on this throughout the next two weeks.
Next Wednesday is our field trip to the North Carolina Symphony. We ask that the students dress nice for this. No 3-piece-suits or tuxedos required, but try to avoid sending them to school in athletic shorts. Also, be sure your child is here on time on Wednesday as the bus will be leaving fairly early in the morning.
Since we had two snow days recently, we will be sending interims home next Thursday instead of next Tuesday. Please look for interims to come home next Thursday (2.25.16).
That's all for this week.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns please let me know.

Hello parents,
Keep those fingers crossed that we don't get any more inclement weather that will throw off our schedule.
This Friday is a half day. Please make sure you know how your child is getting home. Dismissal is at 1:15.
Friday is also the Valentine's Day dance. Dinner at 5:30, dance at 6:30. This is NOT a drop-off dance. You must attend with your child if your child plans to attend.
Friday is also the Book Character Parade. Dress up as your favorite book character and join the parade that starts at 9:30.
Enterprise Day is going to be on Wednesday, March 2nd from 2:00-3:00. If you can join us, please try to show up. It is always an eventful and exciting afternoon, and the students love to show off their hard work in creating a business. Thank you for all the help from home on this. This will be our last 4th grade fundraiser for the year. Tickets will be sold to parents (4th grade students earn tickets through behavior and may not purchase tickets) for $1 per 5 tickets. You may purchase those tickets when you show up for Enterprise Day.
We have made a change in vocabulary practice for this quarter. Vocabulary will now be practiced and assessed on Mobymax.com. It is a website that can assess student skill in real time and introduce new vocabulary words when students are ready. I felt that this program would be more beneficial to the students since each student gets a different set of vocabulary words. For that reason, there will no longer be vocabulary tests on Fridays. I will be sending home parent portal log-in information today with the students if you would like to log in to see their progress. The expectation is that students spend 10 minutes per night on vocabulary.
I have been asked to share this information about K-Kids:
___________
Pleasant Union K-Kids Club is sponsoring a Track 4 food drive in February. We will fill 22+ backpacks with groceries (one per classroom) to provide weekend food for children in the North Raleigh area.

Children receive a backpack containing six balanced meals and two healthy snacks at the end of every week. 1 in 4 children in NC is at risk of hunger. For more information, please visit FoodShuttle.org.
Each backpack consists of enough food to prepare 6 meals and 2 snacks.
3 SHELF-STABLE MILKS
2 JUICE BOXES
1 CANNED FRUIT
2 CANNED VEGGIES
2 CANNED MEATS
2 PACKS OF NOODLES

We have 3 trips we are collecting for, Symphony ($2), HONK musical ($7), and Carolina Ocean Studies ($10 per person). If you are unsure if we still need permission slips or payment please just ask.
Enterprise day information was sent home yesterday. We had to move that back one day due to a technology conference. Enterprise day will be March 2nd in the afternoon. We would love to have you here for that as it is always a rowdy and exciting time for the 4th graders. Whenever enterprise day comes up, we (teachers) usually get plenty of emails asking for specifics. We will try to be as explicit with explaining the logistics and expectations to your children as we can. Please ask them first if you have questions. If you are still unclear about something after talking with them, I would be happy to answer your questions through email.
I have attached the enterprise day information sheet if you didn't happen to see that in your child's backpack last night.
Yesterday we started with a new website (OpenEd.com) that I've heard good things about. I have not used it before, so I am still figuring it out, but if you would like to sign up from the parent side and explore, please ask your child to sign in on OpenEd.com and you can link your parent account through that. I'm not sure what you can do from the parent side, but I wanted to let you know in case you were interested.
We have been working hard on our Amazing Dash Robotics projects. We are hoping to finish up with that project by next week.
Next Friday is an early release (1:15). Make sure you have transportation figured out for that Friday.
Next Friday is also our Valentine's dance. Dinner starts at 5:30, dance starts at 6:30.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to ask.
Thank you.

Hello parents,
Can you believe we only have one more week until the end of 2nd quarter?
Here are the important points for this week.
Tuesday (12.15.15) is Case 21 testing for English Language Arts.
Wednesday (12.16.15) is Case 21 testing for Math.
Please make sure your child gets plenty of sleep and a good breakfast for those testing dates. This test is a good indication for what to expect for EOG at the end of the year. It is helpful for students to have practice with test taking stamina so they know what to expect at EOG time.
Due to testing this week, we will not have a vocabulary list.
Thursday (12.17.15) is our winter learning experience. That is from 2:15-3:30. We would love for you to join us if you are available.
Thursday (12.17.15) is also "Tacky Holiday Attire" day for Pleasant Union.
Friday (12.18.15) is early release. Please make sure you child knows how they are getting home that day. Dismissal is at 1:15.
Friday is also "Pajama Day" for Pleasant Union.
Friday will be pay-out day for class dojo points. I sent a signup genius asking for candy, trinkets, toys, pencils, etc. Thank you in advance for anyone willing to donate to the class for that auction. It is much appreciated. Here is a link to the sign-up if you did not get the email. http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0d4bacac2ea2fc1-class2
Thank you all for a wonderful start to this school year. Have a wonderful and safe holiday break. Classes will resume Monday, January 25th.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns please let me know.

Hello parents:
I hope the Thanksgiving holiday treated you all well.
Here are some important points for this week.
This Wednesday (12.2.15) we will have our in-class field trip with High Touch-High Tech. That will be from 11:55-1:10.
Good luck to the members of Pieces of Gold in their audition Thursday afternoon.
This Friday (12.4.15) is the school-wide spelling bee. We will choose two members from our class to represent us in that on Friday. We will be holding our class spelling bee to choose those two representatives on Wednesday.
Next week we will give our science and social studies assessments. Our class will take the science test on Wednesday. It will cover many of the same topics as the first test, but we will also focus on how rocks are made, the rock cycle, the difference between rocks and minerals, and many of the qualities of minerals (hardness, luster, cleavage, color, etc.) The second social studies test/assessment may be an in class project rather than a standard test. Ms. Coleman will let students know on Tuesday during social studies block what the expectation is for next week.
Next Tuesday (12.8.15) we will be going to the school holiday shop at 11:30.
Case 21 testing will be in two weeks, Tuesday, Dec. 15th will be Reading. Wednesday, Dec. 16th will be math.

On Monday, we will have our science test. That test will cover animals, adaptations, and habitats.
This Friday will be our pajama and movie day. The students decided to celebrate both of those things on the same day.
Next Wednesday from 2:00 - 3:30 is our fall Learning Experience.
Report cards will be sent home next Wednesday.

Friday, 25th -- Math Benchmark
Monday, 28th -- Science -- Animals, habitats, adaptations
Scholastic magazines are being sent home today. I will be sending all those orders through on September 30th, so if you are ordering, make sure your order is input online by that Wednesday morning.
If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.
Thank you.
Hello parents,
Tomorrow (9.17.15) is picture day.
Thank you to all of you who participated in Boosterthon this year. The students loved it, and this past Monday I had the wonderful pleasure of slapping a pie into the face of our beloved principal, Mr. Biles. It was a highlight day for all involved. Thank you.
Next week we will be welcoming Mr. Howard Craft, our writer in residence. He will be sharing some of his experiences as a professional writer and will be helping teach our students how to become better writers themselves.
Next Thursday (9.24.15) is our Family Fun Night at Barnes and Noble at Triangle Town Center. Teachers will be reading some of their favorite picture books, and I will be singing a few songs on guitar. Our chorus will also be performing. It is a great experience if you can make it out.
As the end of the quarter nears, we do have a few tests upcoming. Those tests include the following:
Thursday, 24th -- Reading Benchmark
Friday, 25th -- Math Benchmark
Monday, 28th -- Science -- Animals, habitats, adaptations

Hello parents:
Here are the important pieces of information for you this week.
*September 29th is the due date for turning in books for this month's Scholastic order. Please make sure those orders are in so I can submit the order on the 30th. We have already had many student order books through Scholastic, and have been enjoying them.
*I set up a sign-up genius for first quarter conferences. I will be holding those on October 1st and October 20th. If you did not get that email, check your junk filter, and if you still can't find it, let me know and I'll send it again.
*Monday (9.14.15) is our Boosterthon Fun Run! Remember to send you child to school in running attire. Hopefully this will be easy to remember because we usually have P.E. on Mondays anyway.
*Thursday (9.17.15) is picture day for Pleasant Union. Forms were sent home earlier this week. If you would like to purchase class pictures, please send those forms back before Thursday.
*Two Thursdays from now (9.24.15) is our Barnes and Noble Family Fun Night. We will have teacher readers starting at 5:00pm. I will be playing guitar at 6:45, and our Pleasant Union Chorus will be performing at 7:15. That is always a fun night for everyone involved, so if you are free, we would love to see you there.
*I have been asked to send the following information from Mr. Biles:

Hello parents:
Here are the important points for this week.
*EOG dates have been posted. Monday, June 20th will be Reading EOG. Tuesday, June 21st will be the Math EOG. Mark your calendars so you have those dates down.
*Yesterday interims were sent home. We are half way through the first quarter already. If you have any questions about those grades to this point, please let me know. I will be holding conferences a day or two before we track back in for second quarter. I will send more information as that time gets closer. If you would like to meet before then, please let me know and I'll be happy to find a time for a conference.
*Thank you to those of you who have sent in materials for our Friday cash-in day. Your children have been earning dojo points throughout the quarter, and this Friday is their first day to turn some of those points in for prizes. We plan to have two of these cash-in days per quarter. Hopefully you are already linked up to your child's class dojo account so you can track how they are doing with earning their points.
*We have confirmed two field trips for this year. Thursday, November 12th we are going to Duke Homestead to learn about some North Carolina History. Tuesday, March 1st we will be going to Wakefield High School to watch their production of Honk! It is a Brother's Grimm show about the ugly duckling. We are still looking into pricing and options for our longer field trip.
*We have had frogs, crabs, and millipedes in our class over the past few weeks. I'm sure you've heard all about them, but if not, those would make for some good dinner table discussions.
I believe that's all the important points for this week.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.
Thank you.

Hello parents:
We are now well underway and things are going quickly. I hope the start of the year has sparked some excitement with your children as they acclimate to 4th grade.
For those of you who could not make it to open house on Tuesday, I shared some information about Class Dojo, a behavior management program we are using this year. Please look for information to come home today with your personal codes in order to sign in and see how your child is doing.
Tomorrow will be an early release. Make sure your child knows how they are getting home tomorrow. Dismissal is at 1:15.
Next Friday (8.21.15) is our final turn in date for the coupon books. If you are still selling, great! If you want to send it back early, please do that.
Next week Interact (a local volunteer organization that helps with bully prevention and promotes positive relationships) will be coming to our class to work with the kids. That will be Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday mornings. The kids always enjoy those classes so we are looking forward to having them.
I think that covers what you need to know this week.
If you have any questions or concerns feel free to contact me.
Thank you.

Hello parents, and welcome to 4th grade.
For those of you I have not met yet, I am looking forward to meeting you. My name is Ben Schoenebeck (pronounced "shin-a-beck"). This is my 3rd year here at Pleasant Union. Before this I taught in a few different places and a few different ages.
I try to send out one email per week with the important stuff you may need to know. I try to keep these emails pretty bare bones because I know that you parents lead a busy life. If you ever need to get in contact with me, email is the best and fastest way to do that. Obviously, some situations call for a phone or face-to-face conference, but for the day-to-day stuff, email is going to be the best for me.
Here are the house keeping/beginning of the year things you will need to know.
1. If you would like to sign up to volunteer at any point this year, you need to sign up in the media center any time 8:00-4:00 Monday through Friday. You need to sign up every year, so even if you were on the volunteer list last year, you would need to sign up again this year.
2. This upcoming Tuesday (11th) will be our track 4 open house. If you can join, I would love to go more in depth about our 4th grade year and what you can expect. There will be two sessions held in case you have children in different grades, then you can attend both classes. Sessions will be at 6:30pm and 7:20pm and will last roughly 30-40 minutes each.
3. We are going to be piloting a new program called Makers this year in which students will have more hands-on interaction and problem solving instruction and practice. In order to help with this program we have been asked to get one volunteer parent from every class to attend a few meetings, help on build day, and do some collecting of materials. Ms. Shipley, our AIG teacher, can provide more details if you are interested. She promises that it will be a fairly low commitment position. If you are interested or want to know more, please email me or her ([email protected]).
4. Throughout the year, I will be sending home Scholastic magazines with book orders. If you plan on purchasing anything from those magazines, please take a few seconds to put in my teacher code because it gives me points that I can then use for more classroom books. Scholastic is very good to teachers and helps a lot with making the classroom library great for the students. My teacher code is LGQ7G and can be found on my website.
5. Speaking of websites, I have one! http://schoenebeck.weebly.com/ Here is the link to it. I use it mostly for reference. I post all newsletters there and have some important websites.
6. I've been asked to pass along the following information about field trip t-shirts.
-------------------------------------
Hello 4th Grade Families,
This year your child's field trip shirt changes. 4th grade has their own special shirt that has all of their signatures on them. So please make sure to order your new field trip shirt by August 18th. We will only run one print cycle of these shirts, so we must have your order in on time. Please go to: www.puepta.com and click on the school store tab to order online. If you decide to send in payment with the order form, please make sure your check or money order is made out to PUE PTA as we no longer accept cash.
If you have any questions regarding the shirts, please feel free to contact me directly.

Hello parents,
We are still waiting to get our EOG scores back, but it's nice to have the stress of those tests behind us for now.
We will be working on a social studies project over the next couple weeks. Here are the specifics for that project.
Social Studies project: Each child is researching a North Carolina Festival. After researching they will create a 3D float that contains at least 5 artifacts that represents the festival. We will use the shoe boxes as the base for the float and they can use various materials to build the artifacts such as clay, legos, foam, etc. This is an in class project, so they will need their supplies sent to school. They should have their floats planned by Friday, so they can let you know what they need. We will begin building the floats next Tuesday. Each 4th grade class will present their floats to parents on Monday, June 29 at 2:00 in the PUE cafeteria.
Next Friday (6.26.15) from 1:30-3:30 is our end of the year party. If you can join us for that, it will be a fun way to celebrate a great year here in 4th grade. I know some families have trips planned for the following week and thus won't be here that Monday and Tuesday (6.29 and 6.30). If your child will not be here the last two days of school please let me know so I can plan for those two days and I can send everything home with them that Friday.
I will most likely send one last email next week just tying up odds and ends, but I want to take this time to say thank you to all of you. This year has been a wonderful year for me, and I hope it was a good year for you and your child as well. I am lucky to teach at a school with so much parent involvement and support from home. It does not go unnoticed. Thank you.
As always, if you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me.

Hello parents:
Here is the important information for this upcoming test week.
EOG's are on the 10th and 11th, Wednesday and Thursday. We will take Reading on Wednesday and math on Thursday. There have been studies that show that confidence helps student testing scores, so I would like to ask that you send in two letters of encouragement to your child, one for Wednesday and one for Thursday. I am going to set them on their desk the morning of the test. Please write your child's name on the envelope/letter as well as which one is for Wednesday and which one is for Thursday. It's always great to see the student's faces light up when they get a letter from their parent moments before they take the test.
If you are looking to do any last minute cramming for the tests, s.zeal.com is a good website that the kids use to prepare them with most of the 4th grade standards they need to know.
Please start collecting shoe boxes, or shoe box-sized boxes. We are going to be using them for a social studies project after EOG's. You may send them in whenever. Each child will need their own shoe box so if you have a couple and would like to donate some, we would be happy to take them.
Happy National Donut Day today! There's no better day to remind you of Friday, June 19th--Donuts with Dad. You may sign up through the PTA so we know how many people to expect.
As always if you have any questions or concerns please let me know.
Thank you.

Hello parents:
Can you believe that May is almost over already? EOG's are right around the corner (June 10th and 11th, Wednesday and Thursday).
We will be doing lots of reviewing of concepts and strategies over the next two weeks. If you are struggling with how to help your child with the "new common core" way of math, please don't hesitate to contact me and I'd be happy to talk you through it. I know it can be confusing if you learned a different way.
This Friday is field day. Send your child with an extra change of clothes just in case. In my experience, some children always get wet during field day, so it'd be handy to be prepared.
This Saturday (May 30th) is a full day of school. We will be running on a regular schedule, lunch will be provided. Please send me and email letting me know if your child will not be attending so we can plan for what kind of numbers we will have on Saturday.
I've been asked to pass along this information about safety patrol. If your child is going to be part of safety patrol next year, this applies to them:
_________________
Just wanted to let y'all know that we've scheduled a Safety Patrol meeting for tracks 3 & 4 on Wednesday, June 3 at 3:00 in the cafeteria. Only those students participating in Safety Patrol for the 2015-16 school year need to attend (if there is any question I am happy to send you a list of names). It will last thirty minutes or less, but please let me know if this won't work with your schedule. I'll be placing a reminder letter for parents in your boxes this afternoon-- if you don't mind sending this out ASAP, that would be great!

Hello parents:
Here are a few quick things to note for this week.
First off I apologize for the mix-up in schedule. I told some of you during conferences that Case 21 testing was going to be this Wednesday and Thursday (the 29th and 30th). That is incorrect. We actually had our reading Case 21 test this morning and we will be taking our math portion tomorrow morning (Tuesday). I'm sorry for the confusion.
Tomorrow (Tuesday) is family fun night at Five Guys Burgers on Creedmoor Road next door to Yogurt Mountain. Pleasant Union will get a percentage of the purchases from 4 to 10pm if you tell them you are from Pleasant Union. Please remember to tell the cashier you are from Pleasant Union.
We have started with decimals in math this quarter. We are focusing on persuasion writing and writing to a specific audience.
I have met with many of you recently about 3rd quarter report cards. If I have already met with you, or feel a conference is necessary, I have already reached out to those parents. If you would like to meet please let me know and I'd be happy to find a time.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns please let me know.
Thank you.

Hello parents:
I don't have too many announcements for this week.
*Final Asheville payment is due by this Friday (3.27.15). I sent email reminders earlier this morning to those families who still need to pay. If you have questions send me an email and I'll let you know what you owe. Due to fundraising, some students owe different amounts, therefore we did not set up an online payment system for this last payment. Please send a check by Friday.
*Our learning experience is scheduled for tomorrow (Thursday) from 2:00-3:30. We are looking forward to a fun afternoon.
*Report cards will be sent home this Friday. I will be sending an email through sign-up genius to schedule a day of conferences (probably Thursday, April 16th). If you can not find a time on the sign-up genius that works for your schedule just let me know and I'd be happy to find an alternative time to meet.
*Case 21 testing will be the second week we track in (April 29th and 30th).
*We track back in on Monday, April 20th.
Enjoy track out.
As always, if you have any questions or comments let me know.
Thanks.

Let's all cross our fingers and hope the wintery weather is behind us for the year. Make-up days have been announced. Please see the email from Mr. Biles about that.
This Friday is our field trip to Wake Forest. We had planned for two Fridays ago, but that got postponed due to weather.
Also on Friday we will be having our Enterprise Day Auction. The students did a great job running their businesses and we want to give them an opportunity to win some prizes using the tickets that they earned. Please send in any toys, games, candy, trinkets, etc. that you can to help make this auction fun for the class. Send those things any time before Friday. I have already received some items, but the more the merrier. Thank you in advance for those things.
I sent a letter home last Friday with details on final payment for our Asheville field trip. Payment is due in full before we track out (March 27th). If you did not see the paper with final payment info, you may send me an email and I can let you know your final total so you can send a check in. With help from Enterprise day and our Candy-cane grams we managed to take $15 off every student's field trip. Thank you for all who participated in those events.
As always if you have any questions please feel free to contact me.
Thank you.

Hello parents, and welcome back after what felt like a short track-out.
***First things first, Enterprise Day is rescheduled for this Thursday morning instead of Thursday afternoon. That sneaky Mother Nature is looking like she might strike again Thursday afternoon, and we want to make sure we don't have any more trouble than we need. Parents will be invited from 11:00-12:00 on Thursday. We understand if you can't make it on such short notice, but would love for you to join us if possible.
This is our last fundraiser that goes toward lowering the cost of our Asheville field trip. Tickets for Enterprise Day will be sold when you show up. Please bring cash. Tickets will be 5 for $1. We would love to have one parent volunteer to help sell those tickets from 11:00-11:15. Other 4th grade classes will be in charge of the other 45 minutes. If you are willing to volunteer for that please let me know ASAP. Thank you in advance for that.
Our field trip to watch Treasure Island at Wake Forest High School that was originally scheduled for last Friday has been rescheduled for next Friday, March 13th. Please make sure your child shows up to school on time that day since the busses will be leaving at 9:30 for that field trip.
The book fair is this week. I will be taking the class on Wednesday to look for what they might want and we will be going back on Friday to purchase books. You are welcome to stop in before or after school to shop with your child as well.
Cross your fingers and let's hope for a full 5-day week this week.
Thank you for your understanding in our last minute schedule changes. As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Hello parents:
This upcoming Monday is our 100th day of school this year!
Here are the important points of this week:
*Early release tomorrow (Friday, 2.13). Dismissal will start at 1:15. Please make sure your child knows how they are getting home tomorrow.
*The Valentine's Day dance is tomorrow from 5:30 - 9:00. Dinner is from 5:30-6:30. The dance begins at 6:30. Only pre-ordered pizza will be served. You may not purchase pizza at the dance. This is not a drop-off dance. If you plan on coming, please stay with your child.
*February 27th is our field trip to Wake Forest High School to watch Treasure Island.
*March 5th is Enterprise Day. Schedule to be here if you can. You won't want to miss it. We will invite parents in the afternoon. We are still figuring out exact time, but it will be roughly 2:00-3:00 or so.
*We recently ran out of tissues for all the runny noses we have in class. We would gladly take any tissue box donations if you have an extra box or two at home. We'll soon be out of the cold season, but until then, keep making sure your child gets plenty of sleep, washes their hands frequently, and eats healthy food.
*This quarter we are focusing on historical fiction so we will be learning about various wars and other social problems. The students have been very mature so far and could benefit from some more conversations at home. Some of the topics we talk about are world war two, a surface explanation of the holocaust, segregation, and the civil war.
*As always if you have any questions or concerns feel free to contact me.
Thank you.

Hello parents:
This week has been an eventful week. We have our writer in residence, Mr. Howard Craft, visiting a few times this week to teach our class about his experience in writing and how to infuse more excitement into their own writing. This should lead to some fun dinner table discussion, so be sure to ask your children about him.
If you participated in the cookie-dough fundraiser, the pick-up for that is this afternoon from right after school (3:40) until 7:00pm. Please stop by the cafeteria in order to pick up your orders.
Friday is Hat Day. In the spirit of the Thanksgiving season, we are partnering with some local schools to help keep children's heads and hands warm this winter. We here at Pleasant Union are fortunate, and all of our needs are met, so we want to help some schools who struggle a little more than we do with preparing their students for the winter weather. This Friday (11.21) your child may wear a hat to school and bring $1 for the cause. If you have warms hats or gloves you would be willing to donate, we will collect those as well. All proceeds will go toward helping keep children around Raleigh warm this season.
Friday (11.21) is also team-attire spirit day. Wear a jersey/t-shirt/sweatshirt/etc. of your favorite sports team to show your pride.
Monday (11.24) is the first day of our candy-cane gram fundraiser. We will be selling candy-cane grams for $1 each to help supplement our Asheville field trip. We would gladly take any candy cane donations you have. If you are at the store and see a deal, please send them in. Thank you to those who have already sent candy canes.
Wednesday (11.26) is our 4th grade dessert tasting from 2:00-3:00. As of right now we have 4 parents who have signed up to bring in treats. We would love to get more. If you don't trust your hand in baking, feel free to bring any type of treat (ice cream, pudding, etc.) Feel free to bring the whole family--brothers, sisters, mom's, dad's, grandpa's, grandma's, etc. Below is a link to sign up.

Next Thursday is Thanksgiving, so we obviously will not have school Thursday or Friday. I wish you all happiness over the holiday, and I would appreciate any help cheering the Bears to victory over those pesky Lions who keep trying to take the division title away from the Packers.

Thank you.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.
Thank you.

Hello Parents:
We have been working hard on multiplicative comparisons and text structures. We know that the rest of this quarter is going to speed by so we have our nose to the grindstone every day.
Today we have a local doctorate coming to speak to the class about animal habitats and marine biology.
Family fun night is this Friday from 6:30-8:30. You do need to preregister for that if you would like to join. It will be a fun arts night.
Next week we have Mr. Howard Craft our writer in residence coming to teach the students more about how to make their writing expressive.
Wednesday, November 26th, we will have a 4th grade dessert tasting. I will be sending out a sign up genius for those people who would like to participate. Look for more information on that sign up genius to come.
Our final fundraiser for the Asheville field trip will be starting up soon. Beginning on Monday, November 24th, we will have a table set up in the front of the building to sell "Candy-Cane Grams." Any money made from that fundraiser will go directly to decreasing the cost of the Asheville field trip for your students. Please send in a box or two of candy canes to help us out with this cause. We will be selling candy-cane grams from Monday, November 24th, through Thursday, December 18th. Each candy-cane gram will be one dollar. More information will be sent home in Tuesday folders next week.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns please contact me.
Thank you.

Hello parents, and welcome back to the second quarter:
*EOG dates have been released. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, June 10th and Thursday, June 11th. Please do your best to make sure your child is here for those dates.
*We have already begun collecting money for our Asheville field trip (May 20-21). We are collecting money in three installments. The first payment window closes October 31st. If you plan on your child attending, please make that first payment ($60) by next Friday, October 31st.
Since this year we are going as an entire 4th grade, therefore allowing us to take 3 busses instead of 4, we will have limited space on the busses. We will be able to accommodate for most parents who want to ride on the busses with us, however, if we have too many parents, we will be working on a "first to pay gets the seat" system for this first installment. If you plan on attending, the price will be the same for adults. Please just follow this link and pay for either 1 (just your student; $60) or 2 (student and a parent; $120) people.

*This Thursday is Spooky Science Night at PUE. The science show starts at 7pm and is free. If you would like to join for a pizza dinner at 6:15, you need to pre-order. Please see the PUE website for details.
*This upcoming Tuesday we are going to the NC symphony. Please have your student dress appropriately for that field trip.
*Just for fun -- We had our first "Bows, Ties, and Bow-tie Tuesday" of the quarter. We had 8 participants, and some fun ties. :)
As always, if you have questions, please feel free to ask.

We hope to see many of you tonight at Barnes and Noble (Triangle Town Center) for family fun night. I will be playing my guitar at 7, and the chorus will be singing at 7:15. Some teacher will be reading books beforehand, so show up for the entertainment.
Thank you to all the parents who had a hand in helping out for our learning experience this afternoon. The students were through the roof with excitement. Thank you for making it fun and educational at the same time. I appreciate all of you taking time out of your busy schedules to be a part of your child's schooling.
I sent out a sign-up genius yesterday with conference times. If you did not receive that email, please let me know so I can get you the information.
I also shared a google doc asking who is planning on attending the Asheville field trip in the spring. If you did not get that email, please let me know.
Our class will be going to the NC symphony one week after we track back in. I sent home a permission slip tonight to hopefully alleviate some of the rush when we come back. If you get a chance, please fill that out tonight and send it in tomorrow.
Enjoy your track out.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.
Thank you.

Hello parents:
We still have lots to learn in what seems like so little time. We have been learning about character traits, multiplying multi-digit numbers, and discovering lots about habitats and animals, and environments.
Tomorrow (Wed.) we will be having a school wide lock down drill. Please have a conversation with your child tonight about how this is just a drill, but also emphasize the importance of practicing this drill correctly.
Tomorrow (Wed.) is going to be a fun-filled day. It is Constitution Day, so send your child to school in red, white, and blue. We will be having a live video conference to learn more about Constitution Day.
This week will be loaded with fun prize days we won from such generous donations through Boosterthon. We ended up donating $101 per lap for our class. Thank you for helping with that. Over the next few days we will be collecting all of those pledges. Please let me know if you have not seen any paperwork come home on how to handle payments for that. I will get that information to you.
Since we did so well with donations, we won a class kickball game which we will be playing tomorrow afternoon, so please send your child with tennis shoes tomorrow.
On Friday (19th) we are going to compile all of our prize days into one big party. We will watch a movie while enjoying our popcorn party, pajama day, and smelly socks (shoes off) day. So when your child comes downstairs on Friday morning asking to go to school looking like Amelia Bedelia, you'll know why.
If you have some bags of microwave popcorn at home and would be willing to contribute them to the class for that party, we would happily accept those.
Thursday (18th) is picture day.
Next Thursday (25th) is our 1st quarter Learning Experience from 2:00 - 3:30.
Next Thursday (25th) is Barnes and Noble Family Fun night at Tower Shopping Center. We will have some teacher readers starting at 5:00 and I will be playing guitar at 7:00. After I am done, our Pleasant Union Choir will be performing.
Next Friday (26th) is our last day before Track out. I will be sending a sign-up genius within the next week to sign up for first quarter conferences. I expect to hold those either the Wednesday (10-15), Thursday (10-16), or Friday (10-17) before we track back in.
Please mark your calendars for May 21st and 22nd. These are the confirmed dates for our 4th grade Asheville Field Trip.

*This week has gone quickly, and it's hard to believe we only have two more weeks until track out. We have been working on writing from different points of view, discussing the difference between the distributive and commutative properties of multiplication, and learning more about animals and their roles in habitats.
*Tomorrow (Friday) is our Boosterthon Fun Run from 11:50-12:50. If you are available at that time, we would love to have you come out and cheer your students on. Since our class was so successful in getting pledges, they have earned the right to pie me in the face, so that might be a little more incentive to show up.
*Tomorrow will also be "Crazy Hair/Hat Day." Feel free to send your child with wacky hair or a fun hat tomorrow.
*Next week Wednesday (18th) is picture day.
*As an early-year reminder, if you would like to see your child's lunch account balance and what they have been eating during lunch, you may check that at MyLunchMoney.com.
*Thank you for ordering your scholastic books online. It makes things one step easier for me. Again, if you would rather send in your orders through school, I'm happy to do that too.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns please let me know.
Thanks.

Hello parents:
*It has been an amazingly successful week this week. We all managed to happily celebrate our Labor Day on Monday, showed lots of respect on our field trip on Tuesday, made it through what felt like our first day of the week on Wednesday, and took the lead as the most successful class in the school for Boosterthon on Thursday. I can't wait to see how we'll round out this week. Since we have been so good at collecting pledges, we have already won extra recess, homework passes, crazy hair day, smelly socks (shoes off) day, and movie day. Thank you for helping your children with collecting those pledges.
*Tomorrow is early release. We will have dismissal at 1:15. We have P.E. for our special tomorrow, please remember to send your child with tennis shoes.
*Our Boosterthon Fun Run will be from 11:50-12:50 on Friday, September 12th. If you can make it out for that, we would love to share the excitement with you.
*Thursday, September 18th is picture day.
*Our third animal is showing up soon. We had frogs, then crabs, now we are going to get millipedes. We have already started setting up habitats for them.
*Thank you once again to all of you who volunteered to help out with our field trip down town. It made for a much more enjoyable and up-close and personal experience at the history museum. I was thankful to have been able to break into small groups for that.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.
Lastly, football season is here! GO PACKERS!

Hello parents:
*First off I wanted to say a huge thank you for ordering books from Scholastic and using my classroom code (LGQ7G). Just from the orders so far this year, I already earned 12 new books for the classroom! Also, since there our class order total was over $200, I received a class set of coupons that I will be sending home. ($5 off the next order of more than $10)
I send some orders in early. Those books just arrived and will be sent home with your students tomorrow. The other order I just submitted today, so they should be here by the end of the week.
*Progress reports went home today. Look for the first number in each section for the overall grade. Each subsequent standard represents a part of that grade. If you have any questions or concerns please ask and I'd be happy to further explain those.
*Tuesday is our downtown field trip. I have two parent volunteers already. If you are available to go and would like to join us on our tour of the capitol and history museum please let me know and I will get you the necessary information. Remember, we do not have school on Monday, and make sure your child is here on time on Tuesday morning. We are leaving promptly at 9:30.
*This Friday (8.29.14) is Grandparent's breakfast at PUE. You may RSVP on the PTA website. They would prefer if you RSVP by Wednesday so they know how many people to expect.
*Our class is currently in 3rd place for the school wide box top competition. If we pull into first place we will get to have a silly string party, so if you have those, please send them in.
*I keep hearing throughout the school how great this class is, and I have to agree. We reached our first benchmark for good behavior incentives in music and art! You should all be proud of the fine young adults you have raised. They are a respectful bunch that I look forward to teaching this year.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns don't hesitate to contact me.
Thanks.

Hello Parents:
I hope you all enjoyed the wonderful weather this past weekend.
We are putting on the final touches for our downtown field trip Tuesday, September 2nd. Please look for, fill out, and send back the (1) field trip permission slip, (2) lunch form that is a half sheet, and (3) $3 for the field trip. We are hoping to get a few parent volunteers to chaperone on our field trip. If you are already signed up to volunteer this year and would be available willing to chaperone that trip, please let me know. Something to keep in mind is that you will be in charge of your own transportation for this field trip. Only students and teachers will be allowed on the busses. We will be downtown to start our field trip (history museum and state capital) at 10:00 and we will get back on the busses to go home at 1:00pm.
Ms. Shipley asked me to share that the AIG meeting scheduled for tonight is canceled. Please contact her if you have questions on that.
I will be submitting the scholastic order within the next few days. If you are still looking to order scholastic books please get your orders in (either online or sent in to school) by Thursday. Reminder, the class code is LGQ7G. Please put that code in if you are ordering online.
Lastly, if you have not yet signed up to receive your child's Class Dojo weekly reports and would like to, please let me know and I will get you the information you need to do that. It is a great way to see their behavior in school and stay in touch with how they are doing.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns please contact me.

Hello parents:
Thank you to those of you who made it out to open house on Tuesday. It was great to meet you all. I just have a few pieces of information to pass along this week.
*Scholastic is great at taking care of teachers. If you order any books from scholastic, please put in my class code so I can get free book points and and get more books for our classroom library. That code is LGQ7G. I would prefer if you order and pay online, but I am happy to send in order forms with checks if that is more convenient for you. I'm just happy to see new books in the hands of your children.
*At open house I forgot to mention Class Dojo, the online behavior management system I use in class. Some parents already signed up to get weekly reports of how their children are doing. If you did not see that sheet come home and want to sign up, please ask and I'll be more than happy to send another access code. It is a great way for you to see your child's behavior report weekly in a quick and effective way.
*I am going to be sending out a sign-up genius for parent volunteers to come into the classroom to work with some children. I am just putting final touches on our scheduling (time of day and best days to help). Please look for that email to come to you sometime next week hopefully. If you were a volunteer last year and did not yet sign up to volunteer this year, it is a requirement to sign up annually. You may sign up in the library.
*If you ever have questions please feel free to ask. I also try to keep my class website fairly up to date with newsletters, useful websites, useful dates, etc. That can be found through the Pleasant Union web page.
Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Thanks.

Hello and happy Friday to you:
First of all, hello. For those of you I've already met, it has been a pleasure. For those of you I have not met yet, I look forward to meeting you.
I wanted to touch base with you after two great weeks in 4th grade. I will have lots more information for you and would appreciate if you would try to make it here Tuesday night for our open house night. I will explain as much as I can about 4th grade curriculum and some frequently asked questions about field trips, enterprise day, and day-to-day classroom strategies that might be helpful for you to know. I will also have some time to answer any questions you may have.
Open house is going to be from 6:30-8:00 on Tuesday, August 12th. There are two sessions in case you have children in another grade, you can plan for that. Otherwise it will be roughly 40-45 minutes per session. Heather Shipley (our Academically Gifted teacher) is going to be speaking for 5-10 minutes at our first session. If you would like to learn about that, please plan to attend the first session at 6:30.
It has been a wonderful start to the year so far with such kind and hardworking children. I won't overload you with information in this email because we will cover most of the "need to knows" on Tuesday night. If you even have questions, please feel free to contact me. Email is the quickest and best form of contact for me.
Have a wonderful second weekend of 4th grade and I look forward to seeing most of you on Tuesday night.
Thank you.

Hello parents:
First of all, thank you for the generous gifts. The superhero picture of my alter-ego is wonderful! I'll make sure to put the cash to good use. And although it took me just shy of a half-hour to figure out how to tie my new bow tie this morning, I look quite debonair if I do say so myself.
It has been a pleasure having each of your children in class this year. Good luck to them as they move on to 5th grade.
Don't forget to stop by and say "hi" when you come down this hall.
As always, if you have any end of the year questions or concerns, please contact me.
Thank you for making this first year at PUE such an enjoyable one.
Have fun, take care. Enjoy track out.

6.12.14 Reminders
Please take the time to write your child a letter or two that I can put on their desk the mornings of the test. Studies have shown that feeling confident will help students perform better on tests, and reading a note from you will hopefully help them with that confidence those mornings. I would love to have them by tomorrow so I can set them up for Monday morning, but if you don't get time until this weekend, please send them in with your student on Monday.
Monday is the reading test, Tuesday is the math test. Be sure your child gets plenty of rest and a healthy breakfast on those test days.
The end of the year carnival will be Wednesday, June 25th from 1:30-3:00. Your child is earning tickets through classroom behavior and class work that will be used at that carnival.
I have also been asked to pass along the attached flyer about a presentation given by Jim Delisle about creating a learning environment for AIG students.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.
Thank you.

Good morning parents:
I hope the weekend treated you all well. I played a beach frisbee tournament in Virginia and the weather was beautiful.
We only have one more week until EOG's. With that in mind, I have HOMEWORK FOR YOU. If you have time, please write your child two letters about how proud you are of them and how well you know they will do on the tests. Studies have shown that a child who feels confident tests better than one who does not. Hopefully getting a letter from a parent the morning of the test will help them gain that confidence. Send them in sometime this week. I am going to put those letters on their desks the mornings of the tests. The reading test is on Monday and the math test is on Tuesday.
Also, please make sure your child gets plenty of rest on Sunday and Monday nights and eats a good breakfast Monday and Tuesday mornings. Also, any child who shows up late to school on those days will not be admitted to the classroom after testing has begun, and will have to take the test on another date. So please be sure to be here on time those mornings.
The homework assigned for this week is going to be on ten marks. I am asking your child to finish those assignments before Monday. They can work at their own pace, and we will have some time in class to work on those, but those assignments should refresh them on most of what we did this year.
Donuts with Dad is this Friday from 8:15-8:45.
Our end of the year carnival for 4th grade will be Wednesday, June 25th. If you are available to help with that, please keep an eye out for emails from our 4th grade room moms.
If you have any questions or concerns please let me know.
Thank you.

Hello parents:
I don't have too much information to share this week, but I wanted to touch base with you.
Tomorrow (Friday) is the last day of the school year for track 1. Due to graduation, our schedule will be a little out of sorts tomorrow. We will have PE in the afternoon, so please remind your children to bring tennis shoes.
Next week I will be doing our final mclass testing for fourth grade. The students will have to read for a minute and recall as much as they can. It is pretty quick, and shouldn't cause too much stress.
We only have two more weeks until EOG's (Monday June 16th is reading and Tuesday June 17th is math).
Friday, June 13th from 8:15-8:45 is "Donuts with Dad." If you are free to come in and have breakfast with your child, please do.
We are currently figuring out our fourth quarter Learning Experience. I will get you that information as it comes.
Next week we will be finishing our electricity projects. Your young electricians have decorated a box to look like a room and wired it to have a switch on either side that turns on a light bulb. I'm looking forward to seeing the final products.
Tomorrow is going to be our last vocabulary test for the year. Starting Monday we are going to focus more energy on test preparation and review.
As always, let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you.

Hello parents:
We have lots of review going on at school these days. I don't have too many things to report, but I wanted to touch base with you.
Next week will be our final week of vocabulary lists. We will focus more on review and test preparation for the weeks approaching EOG's.
There is no school on Monday due to Memorial Day.
Wednesday (28th) is Family Fun Night at Goodberry's on Strickland and Six Forks from 4-8. If you go, remember to tell the worker that you are from Pleasant Union.
EOG's are June 16th and 17th. Reading on Monday and math on Tuesday. Some have asked about the Wednesday (18th) science EOG. 4th grade does not take an EOG for science, but 5th grade does, so you will have to be ready for that next year.
Enjoy the long weekend.
Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

Hello parents:
If you have not yet returned your child's picture packets from Lifetouch, please decide if you would like to order those and send the rest of the packet back to school.
I have not uploaded a volunteer schedule on signup genius for 4th quarter. Scheduling for this quarter is kind of all over the place. Lots happens at the end of the year. If you would like to volunteer, we would love to have you in, please just send me an email. Anytime from 10:30-12:00 would be best in our schedule.
On a more personal note, I am finishing all my work for applying for my National Boards for Education Professionals. It has proven to be lots of work this year, but I feel as though I've grown a lot as a teacher. I have a marathon testing session next Saturday, then everything is done and I just have to wait until November to hear my scores. Wish me luck. :)
Just a reminder, EOG's are June 17th and 18th.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you to all parents who helped get your children to the field trip on time and pick them up on time. A special thank you to those parents who chaperoned the trip. It made the entire experience run more smoothly, and it made for some memories with your child that you will not soon forget. I appreciate you all taking time out of your busy schedules to come with us.
If you took any pictures on the trip you would be willing to share, please email them to me. I didn't want to spend my entire trip running around trying to get pictures, and I figured this would be an easier way to get those pictures.
For parents who chaperoned, if you have time, I would love to hear feedback from you. What did you think went well, what could we change for years to come? We want to plan an exciting and educational field trip. We don't have time for everything, but we do want to hear your thoughts.
The 4th grade recorder performance for ALL tracks will be on May 23 starting at 9:45-10:15ish.
EOG's will be June 16th and 17th. Please make sure your child is here those days.
Please email me with any questions or concerns.

Hello parents:
As third quarter comes to an end, with it comes some Case 21 testing. Our Reading Case 21 is today. Math Case 21 is tomorrow (Thursday). Please make sure your child gets enough sleep and a hearty breakfast.
I want to say a huge thank you to all of you for getting everything in for Asheville. All paperwork is in, and we are ready for the field trip! I will be going over some "what to pack" and "what to expect" things this afternoon. Over track out I will be working on the rooming list and I will get that out the Wednesday before we leave. The trip is April 24th and 25th which is the Thursday and Friday of our track-in week, so get ready to hit the ground running in the 4th quarter.
We will be doing our 3rd quarter L.E. tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon from 1:30-3:00. Thank you to all who had a hand in helping with that.
It has been confirmed that Friday will no longer be an early release day, and that Saturday school this week has been canceled. Please plan accordingly as to how your child will get home Friday afternoon after a full day.
Yesterday we had two speakers from NC GreenPower come in to give a presentation to our 4th graders about green power and what we can do to conserve energy. It should make for some good dinner table talk if you want to ask them about that.
3rd quarter report cards will be coming home Friday. I will plan again to do conferences one of the days before we track back in. I am thinking either the Monday or Tuesday of our track in week (April 21st or 22nd). I will send out a sign-up genius once I figure out how many, and when my meetings will be that week. Please be on the lookout for that sign-up genius email in the next couple weeks.
I have been asked to forward the following information from the PTA:

Hello parents:
The quarter is wrapping up quickly and before you know it, our Asheville field trip will be here. Everyone is paid in full unless you got an email from me this morning. We will be sending home a "what to pack" sheet with the kids next week. When we track back in, we will go over that sheet again, and fully prepare the students for our departure (the following day) on Thursday, April 24th. The last piece of information we need is a permission slip. It is a one page sheet, front AND back, that I sent home earlier this week. Please get that back before track out so I can worry less about having all my chickens in a row. I appreciate you taking the time to finish that and send it back.
Next week we will have our third quarter Case 21 tests on Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Please make sure your son/daughter gets enough sleep and a good breakfast in order to do their best on those tests.
As of right now, our Learning Experience is scheduled for next Thursday (3.2.14) 1:30-3:00. Thank you to Mrs. Tilley for taking the lead on this one. Please contact her if you would like to help, or can volunteer to be here. I know she has some fun plans for a possible geo-cashing activity for our class.
Next Tuesday afternoon we have a speaker from NC GreenPower coming in to do a presentation for the 4th graders about energy and environmentalism.
As of right now, we have a make-up day tomorrow (Saturday, 3.22.14), half day next Friday (3.28.14), and another make-up day next Saturday (3.29.14). Who knows what will happen with the approaching storm next week, but we'll cross that bridge when/if we get there.
Enjoy your march madness basketball for those of you who watch it. My team (Hometown-Wisconsin) made it to the second round this year with a statement of a 40 point win. I guess some people were disappointed with our first round loss last year. :)
As always, if you have questions, please ask.
Thank you.

Hello parents:
It's hard to believe we only have three weeks left of third quarter. What a winter!
Asheville final payments have been figured out and will be sent home today. Please send those checks in as soon as possible. Final payment will be due next Wednesday, March 19th. We made $1,250 through enterprise day and were able to deduct $20 from each student's payment. It was a great success, and the kids loved it. Thank you for everyone who played a part. There will be no online payment option for the final payment. If you have questions about payment, or feel that I made a mistake in totaling, please let me know.
This week is our last week for book fair. We are going today as a class, but if your child didn't come to school with money and wants to purchase books, the book fair will be open this afternoon, or they will be allowed to go tomorrow morning.
This Wednesday our Pieces of Gold musical group will be performing. Good luck to anyone involved in that.
Thursday is our Earth Day celebration. The PUE PTA has put together some fun stations for us to learn about Earth Day. That will start right away in the morning and go until about lunch time.
Friday is our school-wide college support day! Wear your favorite college team attire.
As always, if you have any questions, please contact me.
Thank you.

Hello parents:
This week we have been trying to get everything together and ready for Enterprise day next Thursday. We hope many of you can make it (Thursday, March 6th, 2:00-3:00). The students will be setting up their booths at 1:30, but there will be too much congestion if the parents are here then, so we are asking that you wait until 2:00. There is a lot of excitement among our young entrepreneurs. Please plan to come and shop if you are able. Tickets will be available for adult purchase only, 5 for $1. This money will go towards reducing the student’s amount for the Asheville field trip. We need one parent per class to work this booth for 15 minutes. The "Schoenebeck" time slot is 2:45-3:00. Please let me know if you are available. Students have been working hard on planning their businesses and preparing their merchandise and services to sell on that day.
The following day (March 7th) we will hold a silent auction for students to spend all of their earnings. If you have any gently used board games, stickers, bookmarks, stuffed animals, books, toys, school supplies, etc., anything your child would like to own…please send them our way. It’s a wonderful time for spring cleaning!!! Please start sending in items ASAP. Your donations help this day become great. Thank you in advance for any of those items.
We are figuring out logistics and final pricing for our Asheville trip. We will send a final payment after Enterprise day because we will factor in any fundraising money the 4th grade gets from that to reduce that final payment. Permission slips will be sent with details about the final payment sometime, hopefully early the week after enterprise day. We are projecting that final payment to be roughly $65 for students. Parents attending will be asked to pay the full $80 for the third payment.
We have started teaching fractions and will be working with fractions for the next couple weeks. If you would like to learn the new common core way of working with fractions, please go to http://learnzillion.com/lessons and look for standards 4.NF.1 through 4.NF.6.
Due to the snow days, interims have been moved back to March 4th. Only those students who are not currently on or above grade level will receive an interim report.
I was asked to forward this information about the book fair:

Here are the important items for this week.
*I'm sure everyone has at least a few questions about enterprise day. I am new to this 4th grade team this year, so I am learning as we go as well. Mrs. Trueheart and Mrs. Potter have been very patient and helpful with Mrs. Dudash and me. I will pass along any information I have, and hopefully that will alleviate any extra stress.
Here is a handout that we will be sending home soon. This way you can get the information in advance.

*One other thing to know is that Enterprise day will begin at 1:30 for the children, but we are not allowing adults until 2:00 because otherwise it gets too crowded during set up.
*Interims will go home on Tuesday 2.25.14. This quarter will be a little different. Your child will only receive an interim if they are NOT at or above grade level.
*There will be a board meeting held tonight to figure out how we are going to make up snow days. I'm sure you will be alerted via administration and/or the news.
As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Hello parents:
With the second winter storm which will likely shut down the entire triangle area for about a week on the approach, I want to get some information to you before that happens.
*EOG dates have been set. Please mark your calendars for Monday, June 16th and Tuesday, June 17th. The reading EOG will be on Monday and the math EOG will be on Tuesday. Hopefully you can plan around those dates to make sure your child will be fully rested and ready to rock those tests.
*If anyone has scholastic orders that you would like to submit, I am going to send those in this Friday (if we are at school). If not, I will send the order as soon as we get back to school. Due to track out, it has been more than a month since I submitted an order, so I want to get those books to people who ordered them. Please make sure you have your orders either submitted online or to me by Friday morning.
*Some parents have been asking about Valentines day. This Friday we will not be having a big party, however if your child would like to bring in Valentines cards and/or candy to pass out, we will have time in the day to do that. We have 22 students in class. This, obviously, is not a requirement. I just want you to have the information in case your child would like to participate in handing out Valentines.
Have fun in the snow, and stay safe.
If you have any questions, please let me know.
Thank you.

I apologize again for sending so many emails. Last week really messed with our planning and scheduling. Hopefully this will be the last email I will send you this week.
The next two Saturdays are make up days. If your child is not going to be at the Saturday sessions for whatever reason, I understand. If possible, could you please let me know if that is the case. It is nice for me to have a heads up on numbers.
ASHEVILLE SECOND deposits are due by next week. Please go to this link to pay online. You can also send a check if needed. $80 per person attending! We will factor in the money from candy cane grams ($582) into the third payment.

The Valentine's Dance is this Friday, we hope you can make it. We have lots of fun and festivities for the kids.
We have ENTERPRISE DAY approaching on March 6th. We will have weekly goals to prepare us for this huge event. This week students will develop their business plan. You will be required to sign the plan so that you know what your child is planning on doing. Also, that shows me that you agree with it. :) They should not sell anything that does not pass your seal of approval. Children should EARN money at home for any expenses they need for their product. If they need ice cream and milk to sell milkshakes, they should be working on ways at home to EARN the money for the supplies. ALL of the work will be done at school EXCEPT getting their materials prepared to sell. Some students sell bracelets, bath salts, or items that need preparing, this should begin THIS week so they are able to think and plan ahead. If they are selling bookmarks, for example, they will make the bookmarks at home. Otherwise, all of the preparing and advertising will happen at school.
Please plan to attend enterprise day on March 6 from 1-3 pm. It is honestly a great experience for the kids and parents, and it is a big fundraiser for our Asheville trip. We made over $1500 last year alone. We allow our 5th graders, who had their very own enterprise day last year, a chance to buy tickets as well. Our silent auction will be March 7th. We need donations- see the information below. Students will use the "money" earned at their business for the auction the following day.
NEEDS: We need donations of items for our silent auction! These items can be gently used items from your attics: books, toys, stuffed animals, stuff YOUR 4th grader would like to get. Dollar store markers, art supplies, etc are good as well. We could also use any gift cards in small increments, such as $5, to local restaurants like Chick-fil-A, McDonalds, Goodberry's, etc. You can begin sending any of these items in at any time. This day could not be successful without the help of your donations and we thank you ahead of time.
I understand I am sending a lot your way. I apologize, and I appreciate your support with all of this!

Thankfully Jets has allowed us to extend our deadline for the pizza orders by a day! Pizza orders will now be due tomorrow, Wednesday, February 5th. If you would like to download the form and print it off at home, please click on this link: http://pleasantunionpta.wix.com/pleasantunionpta#!family-fun-events
The decorated red hearts will be due by Thursday since we will begin decorating on Friday morning. Speaking of decorating, we could use some help! If you are available, we will begin at 11 AM. You can find us in the media center, cafeteria, and the main hallway. We'd be thankful for any time you'd be able to offer.
If you'd like to help out the night of the dance, I have created a Sign Up Genius. All time slots are in half hour increments. We will need help with dinner, the cake walk, and the snack table. Please consider taking some time to help. Here is the link: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0C4FA5AE2CA46-valentines

Hello Parents:
Happy track out week! Boy, is it a busy week here at PUE.
Today and tomorrow (Tuesday and Wednesday) we have Case 21 testing in the mornings. Please be sure your child gets plenty of sleep and a good breakfast so they can show all they have learned.
Wednesday is the last day to buy candy cane grams. They are $1 and will go toward lowering everyone's costs for the Asheville field trip in the spring.
Thursday is a day chalked full of fun. We are having Pleasant Union's "Tacky Holiday Attire" day, and in the afternoon we will be having our learning experience from 1:30-3:15.
Report cards will be going home on Friday. I am going to schedule conferences before we track back in to hopefully allow a more flexible time schedule for you. Please be on the lookout for an email about those conference times. (tentatively Tuesday the 21st all day) More information on that later.
As I mentioned earlier in the year. I am going through the process of becoming a National Board Certified teacher. With regards to that, It would help me greatly if you would please take two or three minutes to complete this nine question survey. https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/VBR7SVD
Thank you in advance.
Happy Holidays to you, family, and friends. Enjoy your track out.
As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you.

Hello parents:
As we go into our last week of the quarter next week, we are finding ourselves trying to squeeze a lot into just a few short days.
Next week Tuesday and Wednesday (Dec. 17-18) will be Case 21 testing. Please make sure your child gets enough sleep Monday night and Tuesday night, and eats a good breakfast so they can do well on those tests. It will be very similar to the EOG test at the end of the year, so we want to make sure they have the experience, practice, and stamina required to be successful on these types of standardized tests.
Wednesday is delivery day for our candy cane grams. If you would still like to order some, please fill out an order form and send money. They are $1 per candy cane gram. We will be taking orders until Tuesday, December 17th.
Thursday (12.19.13) will be our winter learning experience from 1:30 to 3:15. We will be having some snacks and watching "The Santa Claus." If you would like to join us for that, please do. Thursday is also our staff's ugly/tacky holiday attire day, so if you want to show off that terrible holiday sweater that spends most of it's life in the back of your closet, today would be a perfect day to wear it and join in on the fun.
Next Friday is track out day. We will be sending report cards home on Friday as well. I am going to try to hold conferences before we track back in, but not until after the new year. Most likely I will hold them either on the 21st or 22nd of January. Please be on the look out for that email about conferences.
As always, let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you.

Thank you.

Hello parents:
Thank you so much for all the birthday wishes, presents, and cards, and celebration! It was great to have breakfast to share with the class. I very much appreciate the generosity, time, and effort that was put in to make my birthday a happy one. (Even if the Packers only got a tie, at least the Bears and Lions lost. :)
Important information for the upcoming week:
Wednesday is going to be our 4th grade pie-tasting from 2-3pm. Parents are welcome to join for that. Thank you in advance to those of you who volunteered on the sign-up genius to bring something in.
There will be no school Thursday or Friday.
As the winter weather is becoming more frigid, please make sure your child is dressed warm enough for recess. If you would like to send in a sweatshirt or jacket for them to keep in their cubby at school so they will always have one if they need it, that is fine with me.
As I mentioned earlier in the year, I am applying for my national board certification this year and will need to have some lessons video taped (both large group and small group). If you have time and would like to help, I would greatly appreciate someone to run the camera during those lessons. We have a video camera here at at school. I just need someone to aim the camera. I am planning on getting a couple lessons video taped throughout the month of December. If you are interested, please email me and we can work out a time that is convenient for you.
We are doing an easy, fun-filled fundraiser to help reduce the cost of the Asheville trip for all students! We have the potential to knock around $10 off of each child's trip.
The only thing we need from you all is a box or two or more of CANDY CANES- any flavor! If you could, please send these into us asap. We will be sending home forms for you to order a candy cane-o-gram for your child or children or favorite specialist, counselor, lunch lady, principal or teacher :). The forms will be available online at the PUE website too! We will also have a table set up in the front hallway for the next few weeks with a special 4th grade teacher elf drumming up business and selling them in the mornings as well. If you have a minute to spare in the morning, we will be up there throughout the month of December. All Candy cane grams will be sent out to students on the 19th of December.
As always, let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Safe travels to those of you who will be traveling over the long holiday. Enjoy the long weekend.

Hello Parents:
I hope this week is treating you all well. We are learning a lot about writing this week from our writer in residence, Howard Craft. He has been spending an hour a day in our class energizing the students about writing, teaching them good strategies to use in their writing, and giving them a little insight into what professionals do in their writing.
The first installment of the Asheville field trip was due last week. If you have not yet turned in $80 for the field trip, please get that in soon.
Speaking of the Asheville field trip, we have come up with an idea to lower costs for everyone.

Thank you ahead of time for your support with these efforts... both on the sending in end, and the purchasing end.
Next Wednesday (11.27.13) is going to be our pie tasting day in 4th grade. If you would like to help out, head on over to the sign-up genius page on the class website. It should be a great way to send us into the long weekend.

Hello parents,
We only have a few pieces of information to pass along this week. We are getting heavy into division, and the students are seeing progress and becoming more comfortable with that.
This upcoming Thursday is our field trip downtown. I have collected permission slips from everyone.
If you have not yet paid your first installment for the Asheville trip, please get that in asap. That will be $80 per student. We are hoping to collect in a few installments so it will not be as detrimental to your wallet as paying it all at once. If you need financial help with that, please contact the school and we will be happy to discuss options.
There will be no school on Monday in observation of Veterans Day. Reach out and thank any veterans you know for serving our country.
Wednesday (11.13.13) will be Family Fun Night at Chick-Fil-A from 4pm to 8pm. Remember to tell the clerk behind the counter that you are there for Pleasant Union. Look for more information to come on that.
I have been holding conferences over the past two weeks and am just finishing up. If you have not come in for a conference yet, please let me know and we will try to work out a time.
We were shown EOG scores yesterday morning at our all staff meeting. Look for information to come out from Mr. Biles about those scores.
As always, any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Have fun, take care.

Hello Parents:
I have lots of information to relay to you this week.
Report cards will be sent home this Friday. If you have not yet signed up for a conference, please try to find a time on the sign-up genius. If none of those times work for you please let me know and I will try to be flexible.
The November 16th Chili cook-off has been canceled due to low participation. We are currently looking into different fundraising possibilities in order to bring the price of the Asheville trip down.
If you are following class dojo from home, please keep in mind that our school schedule is rarely the same from week to week, so look at percentages instead of just numbers. On week someone might get a 35, and the next week they may only get 25. This could be due to scheduling and/or the activities we are currently working on in class. I tend to give more dojo points when we are doing group work and I can observe team work and effective communication. Look for how many good behaviors your child got credit for as opposed to how many negative behaviors?
Through our boosterthon fundraiser, our class earned some incentives. Tomorrow (Wednesday) we will get extra recess. Thursday we earned no homework, and Friday will be crazy hair day. Send your child with crazy hair, hats, wigs, hair coloring, etc, but make sure it will not interfere with their ability to see and/or learn on Friday.
Tonight you should have received your "Art By Me" packets. These make great gifts as well as support the arts.
November 14th (Thursday) is our downtown field trip. If you have not yet signed a permission slip for that, please do so. That trip will be $4. I am hoping to make all collections by this Friday.
We are also collecting money for the first installment of the Asheville trip. ($80) You may pay online (Asheville Payment of $80) or by sending in a check. I am also trying to collect all those payments by this Friday.
Early release will be next Friday (11.8) and the following Monday is Veterans day (11.11) so we will not have school.
The following is from Tessa Freer, our PTA president.
Dear parents of Tracks 1, 2, & 4,
I am still looking for about 7 volunteers for this Friday's Boosterthon collections (as well as future dates). It is basically data input (no phone calls, etc). It begins at 9:30 am in the data room (AG room) in the K-1 Hallway. If you can help out, please go to:
http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0C4FA5AE2CA46-boosterthon
Thank you for all of your help with making Boosterthon a success for your child's school!
Those are all the announcements for this week. Enjoy the beginning of November!
As always, please ask if you have questions. Thank you for taking the time to read.

Hello parents and welcome back:
I hope you all enjoyed a relaxing and relatively stress-free break. It is good to be back, and yesterday we hit the ground running. Yesterday we did an activity with multiple meaning words, and we also started with division. We have lots to learn this quarter.
Here are the important points for this week.
Wednesday is picture retake day. If you would like to get retakes, please send the form back tomorrow. That form will come home in your Tuesday folder today. If you do not want retakes, you may disregard that picture day form.
Thursday is PTA Family Fun Night. If you are available, please come and join us. Ms. Perry will be leading a Common Core discussion at 5:15 followed by a pizza supper for those who signed up. After supper we will be doing a Mad Scientist activity.
Friday is boosterthon day! Please get your pledges in by Thursday night. The run will take place from 11:50-12:50. If you are free to volunteer, we would love to have your help. Please contact the office for information regarding that.
We will also be having a bully prevention assembly on Friday from 2:00-2:45. That assembly will feature one of the Harlem Globetrotters, so be ready to for some fun stories at the dinner table on Friday night.
On Friday I will be sending home report cards for the first quarter. Please keep in mind that with our new report card system, we are not giving three-stars. It is a straight 1, 2, 3, or 4 grading system. I have attached a file explaining how to interpret the new report card. I will also be sending a paper copy of this attachment on Friday for you to see. In next week's news letter I will be sending out a sign-up genius link if you would like to meet for a conference. I want to make sure that you have an opportunity to look at the report card first though.
In the second quarter, we are raising our reading time from 20 minutes a night to 25 minutes a night. Please be aware of that. Also, I understand how hectic life can get. If you have too much going on any one night, I understand. Please just write a note in your child's agenda saying they didn't have time, and they can make up that homework the next night.
As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

Hello parents:
It's track out week! As first quarter comes to a close, there are a few house-keeping things of which I would like to inform you.
There has been a delay in report cards county-wide. There will be further explanation coming home in Tuesday folders today. Track 4 will be sending first quarter report cards home on October 25th.
Tonight is the Barnes and Noble Family Night at Triangle Town Center. There will be volunteer readers from PUE. I will be there with my guitar at 6:40. At 7:00, the PUE chorus is going to perform. We hope to see you there.
Character book projects are due tomorrow (Wednesday).
Also tomorrow (Wednesday), we will have a class pizza party. Our class was the top seller for the Zpizza fundraiser, and this is our prize. Pizza will be provided tomorrow for our class. You may pack your child some extra sides if you would like, but everyone will be offered pizza tomorrow. Thank you to those room parents who are helping pick up and distribute during what is sure to be a festive lunch time. :)
Case 21 testing will be tomorrow (Wednesday) and Thursday mornings. We will be testing reading one day and mathematics one day. Please be sure your child gets lots of sleep and eats a good breakfast so s/he can be ready to do his/her best on the test.
Thursday is our first quarter learning experience! Thank you to all the room parents who helped. We are excited for the fun and education! If you are available and would like to show up, we will be doing that from 1:30-3:00.
Friday is an early release day. The end of the day bell will ring at 1:15.
I will be sending in the Scholastic order for this month on Friday so we will hopefully have our order by the time we track back in. If you are looking to order anything this month, please make sure you have your order in online before Friday morning. If ordering on paper and sending in a check is easier, I can make that work too.
Lastly, I have recently signed up to better myself professionally by applying to be a National Board for Professional Teaching Standards candidate. The primary purposes of this certification are to enhance student learning and encourage excellence in teaching. Please wish me luck on my journey that will surely be exciting, educational, stressful, eventful, insightful, and hopefully successful. I will be sending home a student release form in Tuesday folders today. If you would please sign those and send those back, I would appreciate it.
As always, if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask.
Enjoy your track out.
Thank you.

Hello parents:
Picture day is tomorrow, so have your kids dress their best!
Next week Thursday from 1:30-3:00 (9.26.13) is our fall learning experience. If you would like to help with that, contact Lily Doak. Her, as well as others, are preparing for a fun day of ipod photo-hunts and slideshow sharing with food. Thank you in advance to everyone who is able to help with that.
We are coming to the end of the first quarter, so Case 21 testing is going to be happening Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Please make sure your child has eaten breakfast and gotten a good night of sleep. If they are healthy, please do your best to make sure they make it here on time on Wednesday and Thursday because make-up testing is difficult with track-out being so close.
Next Friday (9.27.13) is our track-out day as well as an early release day. School is out at 1:15.
Character book projects are due next week Wednesday (9.25.13).
There is a new report card that will be coming home next Friday. There have been daily changes to the new report card system we are using, so it will be a learning experience for all of us. Please bear with me and know that I will try to get you information on grades as best I can. I will be holding conferences after we track back in. I will send out a sign-up genius for conferences sometime after we track out. Please be on the look out for that.
Next week Tuesday (9.24.13) Pleasant Union is holding a book fair at Barnes and Noble from 6 to 8 pm at Triangle Town Center. I heard a rumor that there might be a certain 4th grade teacher there to do a read-aloud or maybe play some guitar around 6:40.
As always, if you have any questions please feel free to ask.

Hello parents:
Here are the key points for the week.
Two more weeks until track-out and we have lots of work to do. Our class did so well with the Z-pizza fundraiser that we won a class pizza party! I will be sharing that information with the students tomorrow. We have not set a date for that yet. On Thursday, September 26th, we are having our first learning experience of the year. You should have gotten an email about that already. If you would like further information please email either me or the room parent contact, Mrs. Doak. Thank you in advance to all who help. The students benefit from seeing family participation at school.
This weekend (9.14.13) is our Cranks for Cancer fundraiser. Information about that came home, this is just your reminder. Also, Sunday is the Magnificent Mile fundraiser. Both are very good causes.
We are learning about erosion in Social Studies. If you have flour at home, please send a baggie (hopefully well sealed) to school to help us learn about how erosion works. We will be doing that project next week, so the sooner you can send it, the better.
Many of you may have noticed that we are moving into multiplication. We are teaching multiplication a different way that you probably learned. The theory is that hopefully the students will understand WHY the answer is the answer instead of just HOW to get the correct answer. There is a link below to help you understand the new way we are teaching. Please ask if you still have questions.
http://learnzillion.com/lessons/1878-use-place-value-understanding-to-multiply-three-and-four-digit-numbers
Lastly, there will be scholastic magazines coming home next week. Our class code is LGQ7G. It is a one time code you will have to input when ordering. I would appreciate if you could pay via credit card online, it makes for less paperwork for me, however, if sending a check is easier for you, I would be happy to send that in for you in order to get books into your child's hands. Please be sure to put in that code because scholastic has one of the best incentive programs in education. With every order, we get more points that we can use to purchase books for the classroom! It is exciting whenever we can introduce new additions to the class library, so thank you for helping with that.
As always, please let me know if you have questions or concerns.

Hello Parents:
Happy September! I hope your long Labor Day weekend went well.
Thank you to Lily Doak, who has volunteered to be the room parent contact for this year. She was hoping to have some other parents help, and already she has heard back from five others. If you want to help, I'm sure she would be grateful.
Our other exciting addition to our class recently has been Class Dojo. We started last week with Dojo, and as a class, have come up with some fun incentives for the top five finishers every week. I will be sending students home with their log-in codes so you can see from home how they are performing in class. Also, they will be able to customize their own avatar that will show up in class. I know some students are already excited about that. If, after you sign in, you have questions about what it is and how we are using it please feel free to ask.
This friday (9.6.13) is our in house field trip about fossils. We will be doing that in the afternoon, so your child should be ready to share some fun stuff as soon as they get home for the weekend.
As always, if you have any questions feel free to ask.
Thanks.

Hello Parents:
Happy Tuesday! I am sending the newsletter a little earlier this week in order to explain the interims that will be coming home with your children today. There should be a packet with four pages stapled together. The first page explains the change in grading this year. There will be no 3* this year. Students will either receive a 1,2,3, or 4. 3* is not an option for us any more. If, after reading that, you still have questions, I'd be glad to answer those. The second and third pages I would urge you to take a look at. They are the "home connect" pages from our preliminary reading assessments early in the year. It will tell you where you child is with his/her fluency, accuracy, and retelling skills AND will provide you with some at home activities in order to help them with a specific skill. The really neat thing about this is that each assessment has been hand picked for your child. If they are having trouble with sounding out long vowels, for example, this page will prompt you with a long vowel activity. The fourth page of that packet is your child's interim report. We have reached the middle of the first quarter, and this is just to inform you of where you child is right now. These grades, obviously, may change come report card time. This is just to keep you informed at this point. Please sign and return just the last sheet.
Secondly, I am looking for a room parent for this year. If you are interested and willing to do that, please email me back and let me know at your earliest convenience. Thank you in advance.
I have been asked by the PTA to pass this information along as well.
Finally, in math this week we will be starting (continuing from third grade) on multiplication facts. If your child is not yet fluent with their multiplication facts 0's through 12's, it would be wonderful if you could help them memorize those. That would make math much easier, and dare I say, hopefully more fun for them. :) Let me know if you need ideas on how to help with that.
As always, if you have any questions or suggestions please do not hesitate to contact me.
Thank you.

- Target is having a "Give with Target" promotion going on right now. Go to Target's Facebook page or the Target "give with target page" itself to access the app. All you have to do is type in Pleasant Union Elementary's name and vote for us. After 25 votes we get $1 per vote. Target will donate up $10,000 per school. The campaign runs through September 21st or until the full $5 million has been allocated. Remind your friends and relatives to vote each week so that Pleasant Union can earn FREE money. We are already past the 25 votes, so let's see how much money we can raise by simply pushing a button!

Hello parents:
There are only a few important points for the newsletter this week.
I have received money from most people, but if you have not yet turned in $4 for Storyworks, $4 for S.S. weekly, and $8 for the science field trip, please get that money in soon. The science field trip money is due this Friday (8.23.13) Let me know if you have any questions about that.
Z-pizza forms went home Tuesday, and remember that all money raised goes directly toward your child. It is not a joint fundraising effort. The over night field trip in spring will be about $200. We do not have an exact number yet, but this is a great way to help fund that field trip for your child.
Tuesday night, we also sent home a scholastic magazine for book orders. I will be placing all those orders (as one class) on the first of the month every month, so please get your orders in by then. Also, scholastic allows you to order online and pay with a credit card. This would be helpful to me, as it would reduce the amount of paper work every morning. Please just be sure to use the class code ***LGQ7G*** to make sure that the books get sent to this school. Of course, if a personal check (please do not send cash) would be easier for you, I am all about getting books in hands any way possible, so I would be glad to send those in, make those payable to Scholastic.
Tonight (Thursday, 8.22.13) is family fun night at Yogurt Mountain, 8107 Creedmoor road from 4-9pm. You can print off your vouchers on the PTA website.
And speaking of websites, we have one for the class! There are important dates there, previous newsletters, useful websites, etc. Please take a look. http://schoenebeck.weebly.com
Next week, Monday, is our virtual history field trip. We will be learning about the civil war, so you can look forward to some fun dinner table discussions Monday night.
Look for progress reports to come home this upcoming Tuesday (8.27.13). Every child will receive a progress report whether they are on grade level or not. This is a change from last year. There will also be a handout coming home explaining the change in grading this year. There will only be 1, 2, 3, or 4 this year. 3* is no longer an option.
If you have not yet seen the PTA video, here is a link to that as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NvJqxiC3-aI&feature=youtu.be
Thank you to those of you who sent in reading buddies. They are helping our fluency greatly.

Hello parents:
Thank you to all of you who came to open house on Tuesday. It was great to be able to explain some of the important points of the year to you. If you could not make it, there was a handout that went home on Tuesday explaining some of the talking points. Please ask if you have any questions that.
The big excitement for this week--FROGS! We will be observing our Dwarf African frogs over the next couple weeks. We will learn about habitat, biospheres, living conditions, and environment. Keep an ear out for those exciting dinner table conversation about these fun little creatures.
Yesterday we introduced "reading buddies" in the room. They are small stuffed animals that the students read to. In fourth grade we spend lots of time working on learning and practicing effective reading strategies. Reading out loud helps instill those strategies because it makes us more accountable for what we are reading and thinking. We currently have 12 reading buddies that range from gorillas to bears to fish. If you have any stuffed animals at home that you would be willing to donate to the class, we would love to have at least 23 total so that we will have enough for the entire class to read to buddies at the same time. Please send small stuffed animals--anything smaller than a basketball would be fine.
You have noticed that usually homework will be done on edmodo or learnzillion. If your child is still having trouble with those programs at home, please let me know and hopefully we can work something out.
We will be using our flash drives in the coming week to do some typing. We have new laptops that work much more quickly than our previous computers, however, the macs can not be hooked up to their intranet school folder, so if your child does not yet have a flash drive at school, please send them with one soon so they can save their writing projects. We ask that you send a flash drive that is at least 8GB. If this is troublesome, let me know and we can work something out.
If you have not sent in your $8 for the Museum of Natural Sciences in house field trip, please get that in by Aug. 23rd. The field trip will be September 6th. (So far this year we have collected $4 for Social Studies weekly, $4 for a program called Storyworks, and $8 for the above mentioned science field trip.) If you have not sent in that money, please get it in soon. If you don't know, send me an email and I can let you know. If you need help paying, please let me know and we can work something out with the office. Thank you in advance for getting that in. It helps to get all the paper work out of the way early.
Our class website is underway! Look for that to be up and running in the next week or so. It will be accessible through the school website once it is ready. I'm trying to get all the useful information up there in a way that makes sense before sending you to the website.
Thank you for signing your child's agenda every day. Keeping that line of communication open is a great way to hold the kids accountable. I also try to write a few notes each day in agendas about good things happening in the class.
Next Thursday (August 22nd) is Family Fun Night! Yogurt Mountain, 4-9pm, 8107 Creedmoor Road. Go to the PTA website below to get your voucher for a treat. 20% of all proceeds go to Pleasant Union, so be sure to say your "pleases" and "thank yous" when you go. :)

Hello parents,
Good afternoon. I am sending some information in hopes to keep everyone above board with what is going on here at PUE. Since this is the first weekly newsletter of the year, there will be more information that usual, but fret not, I have high hopes that following newsletters will be much more concise.
First of all I want to say thank you for the warm welcome here at school. It is apparent how important education is in this community, and I consider myself lucky to have landed here at Pleasant Union.
We are all getting familiar with the rules and regulations that we all created together. As you have probably heard from your child, we are working with lots of technology this year in order to aid in-class instruction. Please review technology etiquette with your child so we can make the best use of our instructional time together. Computers and iPods are to be used for instructional purposes only. Any misuse of any of these devices will result in loss of that privilege.
Open house for track 4 is going to be this upcoming Tuesday (8.13.2013 from 6:30-8:30). If you are available, I would urge you to stop in and see for yourself what we are working on in fourth grade. I'm sure your children would love to walk you through a "day in the life" anyway. :)
Please remember to send in all money ($4 for S.S. weekly, and $4 for Storyworks), forms, PTA membership (The PTA supplies wonderful support to us as teachers and membership is a great way to help continue that support), lego club, strings, etc.
PLEASE check homework and agendas nightly. Keeping that line of communication open helps immensely with being able to provide the best possible instruction for your child. If you ever have a quick note to send, I check the agendas daily and would ask that you please do the same.
In fourth grade your child is expected to read at least 20 minutes a night (which will increase throughout the year). There will usually be another assignment as well. I understand that life can be hectic and some nights you might not have time. In those cases, I would ask that you please write a note in the agenda explaining that your child did not have time to finish their homework. I will ask that if your child misses homework, that they make up that homework and turn it in the following day.
We will be using Edmodo.com throughout the year which is a teaching website that enables students to do their homework and turn it in online. Feel free to sign up to with the parent login to access Edmodo and see your child's information. Read the site to find out how to access and how to use your access.
https://support.edmodo.com/home#forums/20888720-how-to-sign-up-as-a-parent
I will also add videos at times from a site called learn zillion (http://learnzillion.com/lessons) to help children review the concepts taught in class. This may help parents at times understand the "new" standards that are VERY different from your method of multiplying, dividing, finding area, etc. Many things change quickly in the education world and these videos will help you understand the new best practices for teaching children different problem solving skills.

As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions and/or concerns.
I look forward to a successful 4th grade year for your child and hope to see you all on Tuesday.
